In Loving Memory of

Marion Alice Caven-Gorman-Molitor

Forever in our Hearts

Aged 94 Years 3 Months 28 Days

Born on June 12, 1910 in Port Angeles, Washington

Died on October 10, 2004 in Grants Pass Oregon

Daughter of William Thomas Caven and Florence Adella Hogan

Paternal Granddaughter of Hugh Thomas Caven & Mary Jane Walker

Maternal Granddaughter of William Sterrins Hogan & Alice Chase

Mother of Ronald D. Gorman, Nicholas Molitor and the late Vernon E. Gorman and Robert W. Gorman.

Descended from over a hundred Kings and Queens of all the kingdoms of Europe.  A third cousin of Samuel Lambton Clemons (Mark Twain), her Walker ancestors were early settlers of the Appalachian Valleys of Virginia and Kentucky; Alexander Walker came to New Hampshire with Rev. James McGregor in 1718.  Her maternal grandfather was United States Marshal William Sterrins Hogan of Howard, South Dakota in the late 1800's.  Her Chase ancestors came to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in the early 1600's.  In Noah years she lived 1,229, years if you realize back then the Earth went around the biblical Sun every day, so they must have been counting Moons.

Marion was born in 1910 in Port Angeles, Washington, her mother, Florence Adella Hogan-Caven died from tuberculosis, when Marion was 3 years old.  Marion her sister Mildred  and brothers Eldridge and Norman were raised by her father William Thomas Caven.  At 15 she married Leland Winfred Gorman of Spring Valley, Wisconsin on March 30th, 1926 in Eau Claire, WI, whom she had 3 boys with, Vern, Bob and Ron.  She divorced and married Robert Molitor and had another son, Nicolas. Marion was known to of had nearly as many husbands as Liz Taylor and married 2 of them twice.  One of her Husbands must have been named Reynolds because she also went by Marion Reynolds much of the last 30 or so years (if anybody knows the other husbands names please let me know).  She worked as a cocktail waitress in Monterey, CA.

After researching the family tree I have found that her first husband Leland "Teddy" Gorman was also her 8th cousin. They had common 7th great grandparents,  William Bradley and Alice Prichard (1640s CT).  She and Teddy are both also descended from King Edward I "Longshanks" of England.

She lived in Monterey, CA from the mid 50's to the early 70's; with her son Robert in Fremont, CA a good part of the 90's; and alternated occasionally with her son Vernon in Redwood City, CA. She was at her son Robert's side when he died in 2000. Marion spent her last two years at Spring Village Assisted Living in Grants Pass, OR.  Grandma kept her wits up to the last year but seemed to lose her memory before she passed.

Condolences

I remember in the early 60's Grandma making sure we cut all our food into bite size pieces and chew each piece 20 times.  I have her on video in 2000, saying "I'm gonna live forever, I'm never gonna die".  She claimed she had an out of body experience and she refused to go because she wasn't finished here, and she wasn't going anywhere. The last few times I talked to her, she did not know which of her sons she was talking to and each time I would remind her I was Bobby's son, Bill.  Grandma was a very proper lady and had a very long and I'm sure, interesting life.  She saw the world go through both World Wars, a few other wars and, the attacks on the World Trade Center.  She came from the days when horses were still popular and lived to see the days of exploring Mars.

Grandma and I had a little secret that she made me promise never to tell my dad.  When my dad died, I told her I never told him, she said "oh, I told him years ago".  Now it is my little secret, hehe!  Grandma always liked my curls and hair, dad thought I should cut it (thats not the secret).  I will always remember her.

Love you Grandma!

Bill

Thanks so much for the tribute to Grandma.  I loved looking at the picture.  It is one I have never seen.  We are full of fond memories of that strong woman.  She will live on in all of us.  I wish I had gotten to see her one more time, but from what Michael says when he saw her a month before, she was happy, and had hardly recognized Dad.  Only for a brief moment.  So, I would have been seeing her for my benefit, as she wouldn't remember much.  Still, we expected it, but one last kiss would have done me wonders.

Love to you and Bruce.

Love, Marion

Although I did not have the pleasure of knowing your Grandmother I do know what it is like to lose a beloved grandmother.  A quote that I have remembered since I lost my Great Grandmother has meant a lot to me,

“Nothing speaks so softly, yet is heard so loudly, as a grandmother’s love.”

You have made your family proud by your research into the genealogy, history and dedication to their memories.

To you and yours I extend my deepest sympathies.

Tia J. Gorman
