The One and Only Unsinkable Bobby Gorman

Bob Gorman

Bob was the second son of Leland Winfred Gorman and Marion Alice Caven, he had an older brother named Vern and two younger brothers, Ron and later from his mothers second marriage his brother Nick.   Robert was named after his grandfathers Robert Gorman U.E. and William Caven.

He grew up in Wisconsin, Washington State and Northern California.  He was a radioman on a P2V in the US Navy during the Korean War but never left the states.  He rode in the bubble on the belly of the plane (see picture) I took him to the Titanic Exhibition in Orlando, Florida and other visitors were amazed as he tapped out the Morris code distress signal of the sinking Titanic.

He was on the swim team at Berkley High School and was a top swimmer for the US Navy Swim Team where he had several trophies for beating returning Olympic swimmers.

While working at Bell Telephone in Oakland he met his love Arlene Weston and married her on June 9, 1956 at Carmel By The Sea, CA.  They had four children, Danna, Bill, Bruce and Ron.

In the early 60's he worked at Lockheed as an electronics instructor. He was also was a Fuller Brush salesman.  About 1964/65 he and mom both worked at the Stanford Linear Accelerator where I also worked in 1979. Around 1966 he began working for G. J. Yamas Company as a temperature controls electrician and carried an IBEW union card.  He retired from Yamas about 1996.

Dad had a 14 foot aluminum boat that he took us fishing with in San Francisco Bay near San Mateo. One day after fishing he took us for a quick  spin and the boat capsized a couple miles north of the San Mateo bridge, Ron had a cast on his arm that got well soaked.  We were rescued by some other fishermen and towed back to the marina.  The picture on the left is when we went sturgeon fishing near the Moth Ball Fleet in Suisin Bay, Bruce caught a 48 inch sturgeon, I got a severe sun burn from being on tetracycline.

Dad passed away at 12:14 AM on October 21, 2000 after six months of suffering due to carelessness and unsanitary hospital conditions at Kaiser San Francisco and improper use of equipment which destroyed 75% of his lungs.  Please write your government reps and demand strict hospital sanitary procedures and implementation of surgical surveillance equipment.

The picture to the right (abt. 1970) to the right is from left to right Ron, Danna, Bruce and I on top of Mission Peak in Fremont, CA where Dad's ashes rest.

On the left is Bob in 1999 during his vacation to Hawaii and Tahiti.
